The capability of electrical resistance techniques to sense and locate damage in carbon fibre comp laminates of realistic size will be determined. Studies will be made using finite element models o current flow in multi directional (cfrp) laminates. Both flow along the carbon fibres and transverse conduction via carbon to carbon contact will be studied. The influence of damage in the form of fil breaks, delamination cracks and splits on calculated potential distributions will be determined. capability to sense damage experimentally, using arrays of contact probes will be determined. Accu: and sensitivity as a function of probe spacing and location will be established. Techniques for manufacture of mechanically robust and durable contact probes will be developed. Measurement strategies for optimum sensitivity to detection, location and characterisation of different damage types will developed. Computer based techniques, involving if necessary AI techniques will be used to interrogate matrices of probes across large cfrp structures, and infer damage location and size. External environmental factors influencing the potential measurements, such as mechanical strain, ambient temperature and humidity will be assessed for their effect on the accuracy and reproducibilty of the technique.A technology demonstrator wll be constructed and performance eveluated using industry performance criteria.
