Summary on Grant Application Form
An 0.5m centrifugal spray-forming deposition (CSD) facility has been installed in the new net shape building which allows the production of powder and spray-formed preforms under vacuum. The programme aims firstly, to use the extensive instrumentation on this facility to obtain fundamental data of these processes, which will allow modelling and hence efficient operation of the facility for the production of powder and spray-formed product. Secondly, using this data the programme aims to produce preforms for ring rolling to form demonstrator engine castings using the IRC patented burn-resistant beta Ti alloy. A major part of this work will be the development of the understanding of the process so that the desired microstructure and properties of the products can be obtained. Thirdly, powder of the same alloy will be produced for use in the laser forming facility to assess the potential of this technology for blade repair and blade tipping. Fourthly, spray formed material will be made from a patented TiAl-based alloy for subsequent rolling to sheet for superplastic studies and for the ultimate production of foil of this alloy.
