Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed work concerns the development and characterisation of a novel type of thick film sensor based on piezoelectric paint for use on large structures for health monitoring, vibration reduction, etc. Two sub-projects are proposed, to be carried out by a post doctoral Research Associate and a PhD student respectively. The main project covers the development and optimisation of fabrication techniques for thick-film dynamic strain sensors in which the active piezoelectric component is deposited as a point rather than the conventional ink or thick-film paste. Various sensors will be developed and characterised for structural vibration applications in terms of bandwidth, dynamic range and environmental stability. A more advanced directional strain sensor will then be developed. Finally, a demonstrator rig will be built to show the effectiveness of the sensors in a simulated structural health monitoring application. The subsidiary PhD project will be mainly concerned with characterisation of the properties of the thick-film materials by measuring the peizoelectric coefficients d33 and d31 of thick-films. This will require the development of suitable equipment and techniques. In addition, the student will undertake tests on the effects of annealing the piezoelectric component of the paint and on stability of the material using accelerated weathering.
