The primary aim of this proposal is to build a sub-projector lens reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) system for a Jeol 2000FX transmission electron microscope (TEM) and use it for the direct assessment of the near surface microstructure of sputter deposited biocompatible coatings based on (i) the hydroxyapatite/doped-TiN/Ti system, used to promote bone ingrowth for orthopaedic implants; (ii) Ti-doped hydrogenated diamond like carbon (DLC) coatings on TiC/TiN/Ti for haemocompatible coatings and (iii) NiTi alloys that have potential use as vena cava filters, stents, guidewires, spacers and pins within the healing body. The RHEED stage, when located below the TEM projector lens, will enable diffraction information from as deposited coatings to be directly observed on the viewing screen. No sample preparation time is required (as distinct from the many hours required to prepare electron transparent foils for TEM assessment) and so the rapid turn around of structural information can be used to optimise the respective layer deposition processes. The RHEED structural assessment will complement conventional cross-sectional TEM characterisation of the deposited films as required. A challenging scientific part of the project is to gain improved understanding of the interaction of high energy electrons with material surfaces at glancing incidence.
