This proposal is concerned with producing the next generation of membranes that will reshape the gas separation/generation industry. The rheological properties of polymer solutions, the effect of shear fields on polymer precipitation and membrane formation will be studied with a view to producing highly oriented, thin and defect free membrane active layers. This initial phase will then lead on to a full investigation of hollow fibre membrane production. The spinning process will be investigated through a statistical experimental design methodology in order to optimize membrane manufacture. At the end of this second phase of work it is anticipated that a new breed of super selective industrial gas separation membranes will have been created. During this time extensive spectroscopic studies will be carried out in order to probe the rheologically induced molecular orientation in the skin layer of the membranes. Finally, a pilot plant scale prototype advanced membrane system will be constructed and tested. It is felt that the project has huge commercial potential.
