Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project will build upon the previous and exisiting work at De Montfort and Warwick Universities. De Montfort University has shown that it is feasible to produce die-castings from tools which are made from steel laminations that are clamped together. Warwick University has shown that it is technically possible and more economic to manufacture large forming tools by brazing together metal laminates. This project will bring together these two areas of work to investigate the manufacture and use of clamped laminated tools for producing prototype die-castings and the manufacture of bonded laminated tools for serious production quantities. There are several important areas of research that wilol be investigated that will lead to lower cost rapid tooling that will laso be more flexible and more efficient than traditional tooling. The industrial partnership is particularly strong with automotive companies represented by Rover, Lucas and Perkins; Casting suppliers represented by Technicast and Kaye (Presteigne); Tooling by Webster Keights and braze materials by Sulzer-Metco.
