Summary on Grant Application Form
The aims of the project are to reduce unnecessary damage to the hard dental tissues of patients through increased understanding of existing ultrasonic equipment and development of new designs. This will be achieved using a laser vibrometer which will establish the oscillation of the ultrasonic tips. This technique will characterise the present range of clinical devices to determine their effectiveness and to link this with other biophysical effects that occur around the tip. Changes in the oscillation of the tips under clinical usage will be determined initially using model systems in vitro with a move towards in vivo assessment. Workshops will bring together both clinicians and industry and will develop the scientific data provided from the vibrometer studies. An outcome will be the establishment of a centre for dental ultrasound which will be a resource for clinicians. A range of new ultrasonic tip designs based on the scientific data generated will be a measurable outcome which can be made available to the dental community. A strong feature is the involvement of industry in the development process. The project will be immensely helpful locally whilst the dissemination plans will benefit patients, clinicians and industry at both national and international level.
