Summary on Grant Application Form
The atomic x-ray absorption fine structure (AXAFS) are low frequency oscillations in the extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) data which yield peaks in the Fourier transform of the data at values of r(A) which are too small to be realistically attributed to scattering of the photoelectron off near neighbour atoms. These peaks are, thus, related to the backscattering of the photoelectron by the interstitial charge density around the absorbing atom. Recently the observation of AZAFS features in the XAS of electrochemical systems has been reported. The proposed work represents a preliminary investigation of the potential dependence of the AXAFS for supported electrocatalysts. The work proposed in this application follows from the comments of the referees of a proposal submitted to the EPSRC in April 1998. It was the referees' opinion that the experimental programme which has been submitted was of an interaction with experts in the theory of XAS. The funding provided by this travel grant will enable a collaboration with Professor JJ Rehr of the University of Washington to be established.
