Summary on Grant Application Form |
The effects of strain are present in almost all heterepitaxial systems, but there is very little systematic understanding of how atomistic processes are affected by strain relaxation, apart from a few particular cases. Moreover, there is no computational framework with the generality of techniques, which have been used for homoepitaxial systems. Recent detailed comparisons between kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) simulations and scanning tunnelling microscopy measurements have revealed in astonishing details how islands evolve during homoepitaxy on GaAs (001). We now need to incorporate the effects of strain into this model. This project aims to fulfil this goal by incorporating recent developments in the theory of strain in thin films with KMC simulations to understanding the growth in Stranski-Krastanov systems, which form the basis for investigating new physics and developing new device concepts based on quantum dots.
