A new method for the synthesis of ternary sulfides, selenides and tellurides is proposed based on a technique developed at Nottingham. The method of separated reactants will be used to produce single crystals of single phase materials by the metathesis reaction of ternary oxides with yttrium sulfide and other chalcogenides. Systems to be studied include the layered intercalates AMX2 (A=alkali metal X=S, Se or Te) which are potential ionic conductors suitable for use in solid state batteries: Group 2 ternary chalcogenides of type AMX3 and AM2X5 (A=Mg, Ca, Sr or Ba, X=S, Se, Te) - some of which are superconducting and ternary mixed transition metal chalcogenides MM'X2 (X=S, Se or Te) examples of which have a wide range of magnetic properties including colossal magneto resistance. The new synthetic route generally produces products in the form of single crystals at lower temperatures than conventional methods enabling full structural characterisation of the phases by diffraction methods. Magnetic and electrical properties will be determined for all new phases prepared in the project.
