Summary on Grant Application Form
The Electronic Materials and Devices research group in the school of electronic and electrical engineering at the University of Birmingham have been extremely fortunate in receiveing a donation of equipment from Marconi Electronic Systems (MES). The equipment is for the deposition and processing of thin films. The main pieces are a reactive ion etcher, an ion beam miller, a Leybold Z550 sputter coater and a High Temperature Superconductor (HTS) sputtering system based on the Leybold 330 sputter coater. There is also a considerable amount of ancillary equipment for the HTS deposition and evaluation process, in fact MES have been careful to donate all the equipment necessary for the deposition of their high quality HTS thin films. The group intends to set up this deposition process to produce HTS thin films on both sides of 2 inch diameter substrates and this application is for a research fellow to help with this work. This HTS films will be optimised for microwave applications and the films used on the microwave device program at Birmingham as well as collaborators. In addition initial research will be done into new films of dielectric and ferroelectric in combination with superconductors.
