An advanced Raman spectograph will be installed in the Department, to be utilised in several areas of ongoing research. These cover a range of activity areas, but they are focussed on several types of thick and thin films and on certain novel systems such as carbon nanotubes and layered ceramics. The type of information to be obtained with the Raman machine also covers a wide range, encompassing details of chemical composition, atomic scale structure and residual stress levels. In many of the projects concerned, the good spatial resolution of the system to be obtained is important for the scientific objectives of the work. Acquisition of the machine will resolve a number of technical difficulties and accessibility limitations currently being experienced with attempts to use Raman machines elsewhere. Some of the work will be done in close collaboration with the manufacturer of the machine (Renishaw) and this is expected to result in improvements both in data interpretation when the technique is applied to certain materials problems and in the technical specification of future models. The total value of the required resources is just over 200k, of which more than one third will be provided by Renishaw and by the Department itself.
