Many of the problems associated with complexity management of the software development process have3 proved resistant to conventional analytic solution. The costs of the development process and the reliability of its products remain a major concern for our future social and economic well-being.Metaheuristic algorithms have been applied successfully to a number of engineering problems ranging from load balancing in the process industries (pressing of sugar pulp), through electromagnetic system design, to aircraft control and aerodynamics.The SEMINAL network will provide a new perspective on software engineering problems, allowing them to be reformulated as search problems to which Methaheuristic Algorithms can be applied. The SEMINAL team aims mainly to encourage the wider application of metaheuristic algorithms to the solution of a whole range of Software Engineering problems. The particular challenge will be to recast Software Engineering Problems in a form that can be solved using search-based techniques. This work will feedback results and problems to the metaheuristic algorithm community.
