Summary on Grant Application Form |
The programme aims to investigate and develop a new generation of miniature coherent optical sources for the mid-infrared by using parametric processes in semiconductor waveguides. These processes, which have hitherto been confined mainly to bulk nonlinear materials, will be extended to semiconductors by using novel quasi-phase-matching techniques based on quantum well disordering in waveguide structures. This will enable the exploitation of the high nonlinearity and extended transparency range of semiconductors in many frequency conversion applications. The main objectives of the programme at the University of Glasgow will be the design, fabrication and characterisation of quasi-phase-matched semiconductor waveguides. The project is a major step in the realisation of novel integrated photonic sources based on the mature III-V semiconductor technology in combination with timely advances in optical frequency conversion and nonlinear optics.
