Summary on Grant Application Form |
When using a conventional head mounted virtual reality or similar display, the observer is presented with conflicting depth cues. Disparity (driving vergence) is present but blur (driving accommodation) is absent because image is confined to one plane. We have constructed an instrument, a novel binocular display, in which images can be presented in 3D or confined to a plane. With this instrument we shall continue to investigate (i) the role of accommodation, properly related to vergence, in the occular-health and safety of observers and (ii) the role of accommodation for observers performing a variety of visual tasks.Following construction of the instrument, a design exercise will be undertaken for a head mounted display based upon the instrument's 3D display system together with any necessary improvements to the instrument itself.
