Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is motivated by the needs of post-production for the movie industry. Post-production techniques are those used between the developed film (as it were, straight from the camera) and the final assembly of the movie. Of course this included editing but our prime application area is cinematography special effect, where the image is manipulated in some way not possible or easy to do in the camera. We propose investigating the compositing and rendering of scenes which appear to be 3D, using techniques more closely related to 2D. Moreover we will do this in ways which attain very high resolutions, as needed for cinematography, regardless of whether the source pictures are rendered synthetic graphics or live-action film images. We will work closely with professionals in the field and have first-rate links to this effect.
