Summary on Grant Application Form
This project is a practical study of driver route choice behaviour on-street. We propose an extensive study in the city of York which attempts to study an intervention (road-works, lane-closure or similar capacity reduction) with a view to investigating how road-capacity reduction really affects a driver's choice of route. other choice aspects such as departure time choice will also be investigated. We propose to use a combination of self-completion and direct observation surveys. The large study will take place over a number of days both before and after a capacity reducing incident and, using video and tape surveys, record the number-plates of drivers in the rush hour in this area at a large number of sites. This number plate data will be analysed to explain drivers' response to the capacity reduction. This will be complemented by a stated preference survey, to estimate responses under a wider range of situations. These data sets will be used to calibrate a network assignment model, our null hypothesis being quilibrium behaviour, and our alternative hypotheses various dynamic models of learning behaviour.
