Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed research programme will compile a comprehensive database of earth and rockfill dams that have been subjected to earthquakes in the past including information on dam geometry, material properties, seismological and strong-motion data. The strong motion records of the coseismic motion on the dams will be signal processed in order to gain insight into the response characteristics of the structure. The seismic stability of the dams will be checked using the simplified method of 1-D shear beam analysis and charts of average seismic coefficients will be produced. The validity of the simplified method will be checked by comparing the results with observations. Important parameters for design will be determined in this stage. Some of the dams will be analysed using more rigorous analysis methods such as the dynamic finite elements and the results will be compared with those from the simplified methods as well as with the observations. It is believed that the aforementioned analyses will assist towards the understanding of the behaviour of the dams during earthquakes. The final aim of this research is to propose a method of analysis for economic design of earth and rockfill dams and embankments for seismic loading considerations as well as for checking the seismic safety of existing dams.
