Summary on Grant Application Form
The application is for a research programme to study the crystallographic and magnetic structure of the materials grown with the LaMBE facility, by using x-ray and neutron scattering techniques. X-ray scattering measurements will be made of the crystallographic structures and in particular careful measurements will be made of the quality of epitaxial thin films so as to understand their growth and how to grow them for optimum use as seed layers and buffers. Rare earth superlattices containing La will be studied to determine the coherence of the magnetic structures in magnetic/superconducting superlattices and Ce based superlattices studied so as to control the valence state of Ce through epitaxial growth. Laves phase superlattices will be studied to investigate the exchange in superlattices containing different 3d elements and the effect of anisotropy in superlattices containing different 4f elements. Laves phase materials containing Mn may show geometric frustration and the effect of different 4f anisotropy on the structure will be investigated. Transition metal superlattices containing ferromagnetic iron layers separated by antiferromagnetic Mn alloys will be studied to determine the magnetic structure of the interfaces so as to better understand the related spin-valve structures.
