Summary on Grant Application Form
A new CCD-diffractometer will support over two-thirds of the research performed at this institution, and will foster collaborative links with Biochemistry and Physics. Five projects are described in detail:i) Crystal structure and charge density determinations of low-melting compounds by in situ crystallisation; comparisons of structures in the gas phase, and in the solid state at low temperature or high pressure .ii) Studies of large polyoxometallic complexes which have novel magnetic properties and are models for co-ordination of industrially active ligands on highly-oxidised metal surfaces.iii) Studies of co-crystals of alkaloids and carbohydrates. This will enable crystallographic methods to be applied to oligosaccharides, which are notoriously difficult to crystallise in their pure state.iv) Elucidation of the factors controlling electrocrystallisation using in situ diffraction.v) Characterisation of hydrothermal growth and microwave synthesis by in situ diffraction. The new instrument will not only enhance our present facilities: we will be in a position to perform completely novel types of experiments.
