Summary on Grant Application Form
A significant amount of work has been reported in the field of digital watermarking covering various watermarking schemes and detection methods. With a few exceptions, most of the work reported deals with still images and copyright protection. Little work has been reported on extending the use of watermarks to video or on their use for authentication and providing tamper evidence. The use of a watermark in this latter way is fundamentally different to its previously defined use. Rather than being immune to attack (in order to prove ownership), the watermark must now give clear indication that the original image has been attacked, ideally indicating when, where, how and by whom it was attacked. This proposal describes a collaborative research programme in the area of digital watermarking for image and video information. In particular, the project will investigate the use of fragile watermarking techniques as a means of establishing whether or not information has been illegally manipulated. The influence of image content, legal and illegal operations, compression method and channel errors on the integrity of a range of watermarking schemes, both spatial and transform domain based, will be evaluated and new schemes proposed which improve performance in these areas.
