The Surrey Nuclear Physics Group will develop and exploit new and state-of-the-art theoretical techniques to investigate new physical phenomena in atomic nuclei being revealed by radio-active nuclear beams and in support of UK and international experimental activity. The Group will build upon its established strengths and successes, in the areas of few-body theories of nuclear reactions and of light nuclear structures, and of their interplay at the limits of nuclear stability. We will develop new theoretical and computational tools for the analysis of break-up, transfer and knockout reactions and exploit these to confront experiment and to validate their use as spectroscopic methods for unstable nuclei. Our recent theoretical developments for like-neutron pairing phenomena in heavy nuclei will be extended with particular application to multi-particle isomeric states. We propose to develop and exploit theoretical techniques for the study of photo-nuclear reactions, with emphasis initially on pion production reaction on light neutron rich nuclei, as a timely and natural extension of our structure and reactions expertise.
