Summary on Grant Application Form |
The programme will focus on the MBE growth and characterisation of high quality thin films and superlattices (SL) in which interactions in thin film magnetism can be studied. It will utilise the LaMBE facility, and current XRD and TEM equipment together with the new high resolution XRD spectrometer and FIB equipment funded under the joint EPSRC-JREI initiative. Four areas of research of topical interest in thin film magnetism are identified; the programme will provide for the growth of 1) Magnetic/superconducting SLs and alloys of light and heavy REs;2) Thin films and SLs of Laves Phases with a variety of different TM elements including Fe, Co, Ni & Mn3) Epitaxial single crystal SLs and spin valve structures consisting of Ferromagnetic layers interfaced with AFM Mn and Mn alloys layers; 4) Single crystal RE films to determine the effect of hydrogenation on the structural, electrical & magnetic properties. In parallel there will be a continuous and progressive assessment of the principal factors influencing growth using RHEED, TEM and XRD. The work will be centred at Oxford (with links to industry) and co-ordinated with complimentary research programmes at Southampton, Liverpool and St Andrews universities which are supported by EPSRC.
