Summary on Grant Application Form |
We propose to develop hybrid ferromagnet/semiconductor structures for use a sensitive nanomagnetometers and magnetoresistance (MR) sensors. This is a collaborative programme uniting the complementary strengths of Nottingham and Leeds in semiconducting and magnetic systems respectively. The nanomagnetometers will be based on recent progress in Hall magnetometry by one of our collaborators and our own demonstration of novel MR effects in hybrid devices. The development of MR sensors is based on similar physics and involves the optimisation of device structures to produce sensors with sensitivities comparable with those currently achievable with spin-valves. The novel magnetometry techniques will be used to study domain structure and switching in single, sub-micron sized dots and wires with in-plane and perpendicular anisotropies. We also intend to study arrays of dots and wires, elucidating the influence of dipolar interactions on the collective states.
