Summary on Grant Application Form
Despite the growing acceptance of PDAs, mobile data applications have remained restricted to niche markets such as the emergency services. A 'killer application' is therefore to motivate widespread adoption of emerging wireless networking technologies such as Bluetooth and waveLAN. Based on our experiences with the GUIDE project (GR/L05280), we believe that the combination of interactive services and context-sensitive information will prove to be this application. The GUIDE project focused on providing context-sensitive information to visitors to the city of Lancaster using a combination of portable end-systems and high-bandwidth wireless networking for information dissemination. In this project we are proposing to build on this work in order to investigate the provision of interactive services to both visitors to, and residents of, Lancaster. The project will offer users the ability to interact with a wide range of services via multiple wireless network technologies. The project will consider the integration of support for these new services and networking technologies into the existing GUIDE system. Finally, the project will evaluate the new system through a series of field trials established during the GUIDE project.
