In order to combine real and computer generated images, two types of information are required. First, and most importantly, the camera must be determined. The camera specifies the mapping from the 3D world to the image and is required to correctly generate images of a virtual object situated in the 3D scene. Second, the scene geometry must be determined to an extent sufficient to allow occlusions to be computed. For example if a virtual object (e.g. a person) walks behind a pillar in the scene then they should be (partially) occluded.The camera for each frame of the video can be determined from the image of a set of scene landmark points using standard methods of photogrammetry. The novelty in this proposal is that the landmark points are obtained directly from the imaged scene and tracked automatically through the image sequence, using a combination of projective geometry and robust statistics.The research will develop in six stages of increasing generality: (i) camera motion restricted to rotations about the optical centre; (ii) general camera motion, but the scene contains a plane; (iii) unrestricted camera motion and general scenes; (iv) scene building to enable occlusion prediction; (v) real time processing; (vi) scene illumination modelling.
