Summary on Grant Application Form |
Boron as well as carbon has an extensive hydride chemistry, but it is not developed. Boron hydrides have a variety of fascinating polyhedral cluster structures, contrasting to the rings and chains of the hydrocarbons. A major step in the advancement of fundamental discovery science in the borane area is the fusion of these smaller polyhedra together to generate completely new types of 'macropolyhedral' big molecules. This area is essentially untapped. The proposal is to exploit initial discoveries to substantially extend the new synthetics and architectural principles of these fusions by three methods: cluster Aufbau techniques on the new flexible heteroborane macropolyhedrals, cluster fusion by development of our new 'boranes as solvents' technique, and the metal-mediated fusion of anionic clusters. These promise structural and behavioural chemical novelty; a prime target consists of new globular types of boron-filled clusters. For all products, it will be particularly important to examine for and define new properties, as these cannot be predicted in a novel area such as this, and possible ultimate applications exploitation could be envisaged in a variety of areas including materials chemistry and nanochemistry, possible molecular recognition and catalysis, etc., and also possible ultimate medical application in BNC tumour therapy.
