Summary on Grant Application Form
Optical in-situ surface probes will be used to study the surface dynamics/chemical interactions of the formation of self-assembled monolayers on metal and semiconductor single crystal surfaces over the pressure range UHV to 1000 mbar. These techniques will probe optical transitions arising from states present at the substrates surfaces and within the ordered layers of adsorbate molecules themselves. The work will be relevant to the formation of novel sensors/devices based upon molecular electronics and the development of surface passivation/protection strategies, while generally serving to help bridge the 'pressure gap' that exists between conventional surface science measurements and the real world.
