Summary on Grant Application Form |
The first phase of the programme will involve the proof of the method. A range of reaction systems that are known to effect kinetic resolution (e.g. Rh- and Ru-catalysed hydrogenation; Pd-catalysed allylic alkylation, and Mn-catalysed epoxidation) will be tested under a range of conditions. Since these are known reactions, the genuine kinetic resolution can be determined easily and used to correlated the 'response' of the method with the efficacy of the catalyst. The second phase will involve the use of the system to discover novel catalysts for known reactions and also for novel reactions (or ones for which efficient kinetic resolution is not known). In particular this will involve the synthesis of ligands that are not easily prepared from 'off the shelf' building blocks.
