Dealin effectively with very large quantities of film and video material is becoming an increasing problem in the broadcast industry. This is particularly true where archived material is concerned. The process of cataloguing and reusing is highly labour intensive and there is an urgent need for automated and semi automated approaches to these tasksin order to exploit valuable material that is currently being under utilised. The aim of this project is to develop a system which will provide a high level of automation to the process of editing and archiving film material. It will use image analysis techniques to extract automatically a description of the film or video which will allow a rapid visualisation of its content, hence significantly improving the performance and productivity of editors and archivists. The system will also produce an index of the mediacontent which can be stored along with the film in a database toi enable content , hence significantly improving the performance and productivity of editors and archivists. By addressing issues in both film editing and archiving simultaneously, the system will assist in the entire production process and provide a near seamless interface between raw and archived material, a feature that will make it attractive to the brioadcast industry as a whole.
