Summary on Grant Application Form |
The development of new catalysts for asymmetric synthesis continues to be an important area. Very encouraging results have been obtained in the epoxidation of alkenes by Oxone catalysed by chiral ketones. We have discovered that alpha-fluoro-N-carbethoxytropinone is an efficient, stable catalyst for alkene epoxidation by Oxone and gives promising enantioselectivities (up to 83% ee). We now propose to systematically modify this compound and prepare a range of novel chiral bicyclo [3.2.1] octanones in order to find stable, efficient catalysts for asymmetric epoxidation of alkenes, particularly terminal alkenes which give poor results with current asymmetric epoxidation methods. We will also investigate our catalysts in the asymmetric oxidation of alcohols, including kinetic resolution of racemic alcohols and desymmetrisation of meso-diols. We will prepare new ketones containing a quaternary ammonium group and attempt to develop a two-phase oxidation system for the asymmetric oxidation of sulfides. If time allows, we will also investigate the attachment of some of our ketones to solid phase.
