Summary on Grant Application Form |
In understanding parallel and distributed systems, there are several distinct aspects to consider. One of these is locality : different computations happening in different places. Another is 'causality': some events cause other events, and some events are independent of one another. These aspects are themselves linked , but contribute in different ways to concurrency. Our programme aims to analyse the different contributions and in particular how they can be used in the analysis and design of logics (that is, languages for describing properties of concurrent systems) and equivalences (ways of deciding what it means for two concurrent systems to be essentially the same). Part of the aim is just understanding: although concurrency has been studied intensively for many years, there is still much that is not understood. Another, more pragmatic aim, is to look at which aspects of concurrency are useful in practice, in that they both allow us to ask useful questions about distributed systems and allow us to answer them in a reasonable time..
