Summary on Grant Application Form
Chalcogenide glasses based on Ga- La- S and Ga - Na-S transmit across the mid-visible to mid infrared region, have attractive physical properties and are of interest for active and passive optical fibre applications. We have established the critical role of low levels of oxide in promoting Ga-La - S and Ga - Na -S glass stability. The vapour deposition techniques to make fibreoptic performs are not achievable, instead we have developed low temperature extrusion to form performs of Ga-La-R-S glasses from which we have to drawn fibres. We propose these develop glasses and mixed Ga-La-R -S glasses (R is alkali metal ion) to attain the best overall properties. Before Ga-La-S, Ga-Na-S or Ga-La-R-S fibres can be utilised in communication systems with design lives of the order of the decades, it is essential to characterise their mechanical properties and how these vary with time. In particular the processing routes used will have major effects on the final strength of fibres. Thus we intend to produce unclad and core/clad, multimode and single mode fibres of theses glasses. Mechanical testing, fractography, zero-stress ageing and stress corrosion testing will be conducted as well as attempting to improve fibre strength by modifying the glass surface. In tandem, fibre optical loss will be measured and minimised.
