Vortex wakes generated by large commercial aircraft present a hazard to following aircraft particularly when they are closely spaced and follow the same trajectory, as on final approach. To prevent accidents, strict rules exist for aircraft spacing and these limit runway and airport capacity.The proposed research involves a study of the vortex wake during inception and the early stages of development and of the extent to which its characteristics can be modified by active and passive control. The aim will be to establish perturbation schemes likely to enhance vortex breakdown and reduce the wake hazard. This would allow closer spacing between aircraft, increases in the capacity of current airports and reduction of the need for new ones. The effect of various vortex perturbations, including the use of vortex generators and pulsed jets at the wing tip, will be studied in a wind tunnel at Imperial Collge. This research will then be extended to the more realistic flow conditions in a large scale wind tunnel at DERA. A new Doppler global velocimeter will be constructed to provide quantitative data on vortex growth and trajectory and to enable rapid evaluation of the various control schemes.
