Summary on Grant Application Form |
Jet noise emissions are a substantial contribution to aircraft engine noise at full-power take-off conditions and can limit engine size and growth potential. Nozzle designs are actively being sought which lead to significant noise reductions. Recent experimental work has shown that nozzle profile changes, e.g. via serrations, can provide large noise reductions, but the processes are poorly understood. Although models for successful predictions of co-axial jet noise have been developed, these rely on experimental turbulence data currently limited to single round nozzles. The project will develop a CFD-coupled-acoustics (CCA) approach which is capable of using CFD to model the near-field turbulence information for arbitrarily shaped nozzles. This is then linked to an acoustics model (either an existing four-source model or a model for flow/acoustic interaction) to predict the far-field noise. The method developed will be validated against the extensive jet noise databases held by DERA and Rolls-Royce which will be made available to the project.
