Summary on Grant Application Form |
The phenomenon of Hot Gas Ingestion in STOVL-type aircraft involves flow processes which are currently impossible to predict using a BANS-based CFD approach, even with advanced turbulence models. The highly unsteady nature of fountain flows, ground vortex flows and intake ingestion flows places a severe challenge on time-averaged CFD methods. Large Eddy Simulation offers the potential to simulate the large-scale, unsteady events of interest, but LES methods are currently under-developed and un-validated for these flow types. The research proposed here will further develop an existing LES method to allow application in flows containing a wide range of Mach numbers; this development will be of significant use in a range of aerodynamic problems. The developed method will be validated against a range of existing experimental data for various components of HGI flow fields, (fountain and ground vortex flows) and applied to both compressible and incompressible experiments.
