Summary on Grant Application Form |
The broadband noise generated by the tips of ducted fans depends on, among other things, the boundary layer thickness at the fan face. Applying suction to the duct wall upstream of the fan face can thin boundary layer seen by the blade tips and reduce broadband noise, but if the wall velocity profile varies circumferentially the fan blade will see unsteady flow conditions and generate tonal noise. We therefore propose to continue development of a system whereby the circumferential suction distribution can be automatically adjusted in order to minimise tonal noise while still permitting the reduction of broadband noise. The proposed system would be able to optimise the suction distribution against various given noise characteristics. An experimental facility for this purpose is already being built under the RESOUND project, this programme would add effort to that research during the overlap period and extend the research afterwards.
