Summary on Grant Application Form |
The measurement of the electrical properties of the oxide layers using AC impedance (ACI) spectroscopy will be combined with characterisation of the oxide layers using electron microscopy and a residual stress measurement facility. The main task here is to investigate how the electrical properties of oxide scales are affected by the level of impurities, grain size, thickness, uniformity, defects and residual stress in the oxide layer, as well as by the temperature and atmosphere under which ACI measurements are carried out. The main objectives of this research is, by using the ACI method, to characterise the microstructural changes of oxide scales and thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) after exposure to high temperature environments. The research programmes are as follows:1. Determining electrical properties of oxide scales.2. Microstructural characterisation and chemical analysis of oxide scales.3. Examining adherence of oxide scales on metal substrates.4. Measurement of growth strain in oxide scales.5. Developing models on electrical property-microstructure-growth strain relationships.6. Determining breakaway oxidation conditions.7. Characterisation of alumina growth in TBCs8. Characterisation of microstructural change of yttria stablised zircona in TBCs9. Developing a scanning ACI microprobe for detecting local defects in oxide layers.
