Summary on Grant Application Form |
The current upgrades of ESRF facilities for spin-dependent Compton scattering studies (a 13 element multidetector replacing a single element one and a IT variable field electromagnet installed) create the first opportunity for systematic studies at ESRF. This will be exploited by the Warwick-based group which is already the most frequent user of the ESRF's magnetic Compton scattering facility. A PDRA is necessary not only for this particular project but also for the effective continuation of UK effort in this area. Three types of ferromagnet will be studied. The first group is the manganite perovoskites which are the precusor CMR materials. The second group comprise rare earth layered compounds containing Sm and Gd which exhibit GMR but whose magnetisation is difficult to study by neutron methods. The final category is the light (Fe/Ni) and heavy (Pt/Fe) invar alloys where relativistic (spin-orbit) effects should be evident in the heavier alloys.
