This research proposal is responding to the November 1997 EPSRC/NERC call for proposals for the Waste and Pollution Management (WPM) research programme on landfill practice and contributes to the specific WPM Research Theme 4.1, Landfill Stabilisation -the role of liquids in the degradation process and the costs of leachate treatment, and the effects of waste pre-treatment techniques. A numerical model of solid waste degradation has recently been developed by the investigators. The model has been designed to investigate the factors that influence both the acceleration and inhibition of degradation including leachate control, pore space geometry and the effects of waste pre-treatment techniques including inoculation. The research proposed is the application and refinement of the model to provide a framework for the design and interpretation of field and laboratory experiments being undertaken to investigate the compression characteristics of solid waste in landfills and the effect of leachate control on the accceleration of biodegradation and gas production in landfills. It is also proposed to give some consideration to the application of the model to the design of landfill drains. The proposed research takes full advantage of the multidisciplinary expertise of the investigators and their collaborators. Keywords describing areas of proposal.Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computing, Energy, Organic, Numerical modelling, Landfill, Solid waste
