Long Period Gratings (LPGs) are an exciting new area of research in the fibre optic sensor field. A LPG is a periodic modulation of the refractive index of the core of an optical fibre. Periodicities typically lie in the range 100 - 10000 micrometers. The LPG acts to couple guided modes of the fibre to lossy cladding modes. The exact form of the transmission spectrum of a LPG, which consists of a number of discrete attenuation bands, is sensitive to a number of environmental factors, including temperature, strain, refractive index of the medium surroulnding the LPG and bend radius. LPGs offer the prospect of the development of multifunctional sensors, in principle capable of discriminating between the simultaneous action of a number of measureands. The programme will involve a systematic study of the response of the LPG spectrum to these environmental parameters, and characterise the cross-sensitivity of the responses, with the aim of developing novel multi-functional sensors.
