Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed project aims to provide generic solutions for accurate reconstruction of free-form geometry. This will provide the basis for feeding dimensional information about the finished product back to the design and analysis stages and will enable performance analysis and simulation involving the actual component shape. The main applications of this work are seen to be in the aerospace, automotive and other industries involved in the production of precision engineering parts comprising free-form surfaces. The main requirement is to reconstruct the actual part shape in a format prescribed by the nominal CAD model, as an encapsulation of the design intent. Additional constraints on the reconstructed shape must also be applied. Special emphasis is placed on the ability to deal with models defined as trimmed NURBS.The solution will be sought based on a methodology for appropriate measurement planning and through correct utilisation of the nominal CAD model. The research will result in the development f a set of generic computational tools. The work will also involve a considerable experimental part using the facilities already available at Imperial College and at industrial partners sites.
