This document outlines a project proposal relevant to 2 themes of the Responsive Production Initiative, ie process technologies and flexible/reconfigurable.The proposal centres on evaluating the feasibility of an agile/reconfigurable machine which can be used for high speed milling (HSM) and electro-discharge die sink machining (EDM)/texturing. The research would investigate the design and evaluation of a separate detachable EDM head (System 1), which could be mounted in the spindle of a high speed machining centre (Bridgeport VMC 1000) and the design of a duplex machine incorporating both HSM and EDM (System 2). Both arrangements would simplify component production and provide significant productivity improvements in the manufacture of hardened moulds and dies and aerospace components, such as turbine blades and nozzle guide vanes which incorporate EDM slots. This would be achieved through elimination of transfer downtime between machines, reduced setting and component inspection and any subsequent chemical etch texturing of the workpiece surface. It would also enhance machine tool flexibility and offer the potential for increased sales/market penetration in the face of growing world-wide competition.
