Summary on Grant Application Form
It is proposed to establish a 1km acoustic test range facility in the Forth Estuary between the piers of the Forth Road Bridge. This monitoring facility will enable fundamental research into the effect of temporal variations in the channel on acoustic signal propagation, over short or extended timescales. A range of novel acoustic signatures will be investigated of application to robust self-adaptive communication techniques. A remote presence microwave link with the HWU campus will enable signals to be studied in real-time.An acoustical method for monitoring tidal flux will be investigated, and the effect of suspended sediment concentration on acoustic path propagation loss will be assessed.Image analysis techniques will be used in water surface feature tracking and the associated video cameras will assist in studies of the interaction of marine traffic with acoustic signals. oceanographic models will be developed to aid in the interpretation of the acoustic signals. In-situ oceanographic data will be collected during intensive sampling experiments (2 periods, each of up to 5 days duration) with the support of the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA).
