Summary on Grant Application Form
This project, submitted under the LINK: Broadcast Technology Programme, will investigate the feasibility of an audio-visual content production, storage, delivery and display chain in 3d including animated models of real actor movements and facial gestures, captured non--invasively. These will be combined with virtual 3d set elements, transmitted and stored using MPEG-4 technology and displayed in a 3d full-space Integral Image display terminal, maintaining photo-realistic broadcast image Quality. The project's objectives will be addressed, over a three year period, by a collaborative team of four academic (University College London, De Montfort University, Queen Mary and Westfield College, and University of Surrey) and four industrial partners (British Telecom, 30 Scanners, Silicon Graphics, and Snell&Wilcox) with existing complementary expertise in the relevant areas. The BBC will coordinate the research activities which will undertake increasingly complex scenarios starting with a flat virtual actor finishing with multiple, fully animated (body and face) 3d actors within a 3d virtual scene. The results will be integrated with current virtual studio technology to demonstrate the 3D production, delivery, storage and display chain. The BBC's established expertise in content production will ensure the relevance of the research work to current and emerging broadcast industries.
