The trace transform is a generalization of the Radon transform and constitutes a new tool for the analysis of images. The image is traced by straight lines along which a functional of the image is computed. Each line is characterised by two parameters and the map of the value of the functional as a function of these parameters is the Trace transform, to produce a triple feature that characterises the image. With the appropriate choice of the functionals used, one can construct features that ate invariant to various image distortions, like affine transforms or illumination changes. Problems of occlusion can be tackled with the help of local image kernels, ie a localized version of the Trace transform. For colour images, vector functionals will be used. The Trace transform offers the possibility of constructing image features that do not necessarily have physical meaning, but allow us to discriminate many image classes. So, the approach will be used for object identification for large image database search and for monitoring change from a temporal sequence o images.
