Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of this programme is to develop ferroelectric materials in Thick Film and tape cast form for application as ferroelectric phase shifters for adaptive antennas. These are for use in mobile communications operating at 900 and 1800 MHz. They allow the same operating frequency to be exploited by several users simultaneously within the same area or cell . Consequently the number of users within a cell can be substantically increased, with a dramatic in call congestion. Strontium barium titanate (SBT) and Lead Magnesium Niobate (PMN), will be investigated, both of which possess the property that an applied DC bias voltage changes their permittivity. As a result such materials have the potential to be used in microwave circuits as electronically tunable phase shifters, resonators and filters. This programme will examine the effect of processing conditions on the microwave properties of the materials and optimise them to develop materials suitable for the cellular communications area. Properties to be characterised include permittivity, dielectric loss, microwave non linearity, temperature response and tunability. Novel phase shifting component designs will be investigated with the Dept of Elec Eng.
