|
This research focuses on innovation in the construction industry, and in particular, innovations in concrete building technology. Individual initiatives and generic types of innovation which are used in the construction industry will be identified by a literature review. A stakeholder survey of people with an involvement in the process (clients, architects, engineers, facilities managers, contractors, quantity surveyors and construction managers) will be carried out to assess the degree to which innovations are currently adopted. The findings from this generic survey will be used to provide a context in which to assess the take-up of several innovations in concrete design and construction, using value engineering (VE) techniques. This will produce a set of 'value profiles' which map out characteristics of the innovations at each work-stage in the opinion of each of the stakeholder groups, and will provide recommendations on how results should be passed to industry. The research will provide both a broad overview of how innovation is used in the construction industry and a sector-specific assessment of innovation in concrete buildings.
