Summary on Grant Application Form |
We identify the need for a multi-functional, reflection-mode x-ray diffractometer to serve several departments at the University of Aberdeen and collaborations with the Robert Gordon University. Project areas which would benefit are summarised as:1) Materials chemistry: the study of the structure and composition of solid/bulk ceramic materials, e.g. oxide ion conductors, at both room and elevated temperatures. 2) Biomaterials: investigation into x-ray diffraction of bulk bone samples to study both composition and peak-broadening; effects of osteoarthritis and osteoporosis on diffraction patterns; study of biological mineralisation leading to encrustation in vitro and in vivo.3) Cement systems: sulphate attack on concrete; phase development in arsenic-bearing cement phases; study of rapid-setting, rapid-hardening cements; pillared smectites.4) Thin films: preliminary measurements of orientation of polycrystalline thin films for electronic and optical applications.5) Examination of biogenic minerals containing heavy metals found in soil.
