The aim of our work is to develop a quantitative understanding of secondary electron emission from molecular liquids. In an Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope, liquids in or on a solid spectrum can be examined, as well as liquid-state emulsions and complex fluids. Because it has not been an issue previously, no literature exists on the electron emissive properties of molecular liquids. This information is necessary for interpretation of contrast in secondary electron images.A primary task will be to obtain experimentally the secondary electron yield curves for various liquids, and then correlate the behaviour with molecular orbital information such as forbidden energy gap, density of states, and electron affinity. In practice, dynamic effects will alter this intrinsic emission behaviour. Whereas in a metal the charge carriers have quite a high mobility, and very low in a ceramic, charge-carrying species in a liquid can have mobilities on the order of the electron beam scan rate. Thus, a form of scan-rate dependent voltage contrast is possible. This, and other extrinsic effects, including doping of the forbidden energy gap, will be examined as well. This work represents an important step towards developing electron microscopy as a viable technique for soft condensed matter.
